Game of Thrones season 8: ‘What the hell?’ Jaime Lannister star on ending

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones season eight, episode one.

Jaime Lannister (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) arrived in Winterfell undetected, until he was spotted by Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in shocking scenes reminiscent of Game of Thrones season one, episode one.

The episode ended with Jaime and Bran staring at each other and teased a huge storyline to come between the pair in the HBO series.

Now, Jaime actor Nikolaj has revealed what is going through his character’s mind as he sees the boy he pushed from a wall and paralysed in the first episode.

He said: “First of all, I don’t think wheelchairs are a normal thing in Westeros. I think it’s like: ‘What the hell?’ and then, ‘Oh my god, that’s the kid.’ I think he knows Bran didn’t die, but he doesn’t expect to meet him.

“His mission changes once again. It goes from: ‘I know my brother Tyrion is there and I’m going to fight the good fight’ to ‘I’m in deep s**t now.’ Because this is the Lord of Winterfell that I tried to kill and I’m sure he wants revenge. That’s what Jaime expects.”

As Bran is the Three-Eyed Raven now, he will recollect Jaime pushing him from the wall and will likely be out for revenge.

His mission changing again could refer to having to kill Bran in order to survive and fulfil his destiny.

He tried it once before and failed, so fans can wonder whether that ruthless side of his character can be suppressed much longer.

Even when Jaime attempts to follow a better path, he cannot escape his past and may just die as a result of it.

He faces many threats by entering Winterfell after his attack on Bran initiated the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters.

The Kingslayer also faces the threat of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who has also just entered Winterfell, given that he killed her father.

The season eight, episode two promo teased Jaime and Daenerys’ meeting and suggests he will have to fight battles from all angles.

He abandoned his sister-lover Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) to head North to join the fight there and this could even lead to Cersei slaying her own brother in a revenge attack.

It was revealed Ser Bronn of Blackwater (Jerome Flynn) has been instructed to kill his friend.

Cersei has decided to order his execution along with Tyrion Lannister’s (Peter Dinklage).

The Jaime star also said: “I don’t think [showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] could have done it any better. It makes sense and there’s a logic to it without it being obvious at all.

“There are also great moments of surprise.”

Could the surprise be Jaime joining forces with Daenerys to battle sister-lover Cersei, despite killing her father?

Could Bran forgive Jaime and strike up a relationship after all this time?

Game of Thrones season eight continues next Sunday on HBO and Sky Atlantic on Monday at 2am.
