Ghosts on BBC location: Where is Ghosts filmed? Where is it set?

BBC One’s brand new sitcom Ghosts gets underway tonight (Monday, April 15) after weeks of anticipation among fans. Written by the team behind Horrible Histories, Ghosts will provide a number of laughs in some stunning filming locations when the series airs. But where is Ghosts on BBC One filmed?

Where is Ghosts filmed?

Ghosts takes place in a stunning country home that lead characters Alison (played by Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) inherit.

BBC viewers will witness the hilarious antics unfold when the pair discover their new house is haunted with several ghosts.

Mike and Alison’s new home is named Button Hall, a fictional building.

Filming took place in a handful of locations but most of the BBC sitcom was shot in Guildford.

BBC filming crews were spotted on the corner of London Road and Clandon Road in Guildford, report Surrey Live.

Cast members Matthew Baynton, who plays Thomas, and Laurence Rickard, who plays Robin told the BBC how Ghosts came about.

Baynton said: “Initially we just wanted to do something together. We wanted to come up with another thing to do together so we hired out a room in town and threw some ideas around. I think the Haunted House thing was one of the first.

“We all got really excited about the idea of us playing loads of ghosts! At the time, the idea was that we would play loads of characters each, as we’ve always done.

“We realised it was a house-share sitcom – and as soon as you stop thinking about those kinds of major drama stakes, you unlock a story that is really domestic and petty.”

Rickard referenced that advantages of filming in the location and style Ghosts is filmed in.

The Ghosts star said: “ All of those house-share sitcoms contain people that are in a situation they are stuck in. Ghosts is the ultimate version of that, they are stuck together for hundreds of years and none of them can leave.

“Then we realised by having the Mike and Alison characters that they then bring the stakes, the worries about money, life and everything you need for a story.”

Baynton and Rickard join Ritchie and Smith-Bynoe in the star-studded Ghosts cast.

The quartet star alongside Lolly Adefope, who plays Kitty in Ghosts.

Adefope is most recognisable for her role in the Mila Kunis-led comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me and Hulu series Shrill.

BAFTA-nominee Simon Farnaby is also in the Ghosts cast as his character, Julian.

Star of Netflix’s Sex Education Jim Howick will appear in Ghosts as Pat, while former EastEnders and Doctor Foster actor Martha Howe-Douglas stars as Lady Button.

Other actors to keep an eye out for in Ghosts include Katy Wix, Ben Willbond, Yani Xander, and Caroline Guthrie.

The first episode promises to get the series off to an action-packed and laughter-filled start.

BBC’s synopsis for the first episode of Ghosts reads: “Alison and Mike, a cash-strapped young couple struggling to buy their first home, think their prayers are answered when a distant relative bequeaths them a sprawling country estate.

“The catch? The old house is haunted by the ghosts of its former inhabitants.

“The restless spirits, horrified that the new owners plan to turn the peaceful pile into a bustling hotel, make plans to oust the troublesome newcomers. But their bungled efforts have unintended consequences…”

Fans will have to tune in to BBC One every Monday for the next six weeks to see what will happen in Ghosts.

Ghosts premieres on Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
