Pointless: ‘Don’t write into me!’ Richard Osman makes plea to viewers after host's BLUNDER

Richard, 48, joined Pointless host Alexander, 49, to welcome four pairs of brand new contestants to the BBC quiz show, with the players put to the test on a series of different topics.

Trying to win the jackpot prize, the contestants were hoping to get the lowest score they could to make it through to the final round, with the aim to give answers 100 people were least likely to get.

One of the first questions put to the contestants on this afternoon’s edition of the quiz show was to name English league football teams beginning with the letters which spells out ‘P.L.A.Y.E.R.S’.

When it came to the final pair of contestants to answer the question, Angela and Sara, Alexander was the one asking Richard a question of his own as he became intrigued about some geographical knowledge.

Before Angela answered the question for the couple, she admitted her knowledge of football wasn’t great as she was originally from South Wales, with her heart dedicated to rugby.

Giving her best shot at the question, Angela put forward the suggestion of Southampton, in line with the letter ’S’ from which the players could choose from.

Angela was amazed to get a score of 27 for her answer, with Alexander commending the rugby fan on her answer.

“Well played, noting wrong with that for an answer,” Richard added, before stating the name of a English league team The Saints, to which he then asked his co-host, “Do you know where they’re from?”

Replying to the question, Alexander said: “Latent Buzzard,” before Richard teased his co-host, telling him they were from Bournemouth but then correcting Alexander once more by saying the team were from Southampton.

Intrigued by the geographical facts, Alexander asked Richard: “Bournemouth and Southampton are almost the same thing, aren’t they?”

Turning to the camera, Richard broke the fourth-wall by speaking to the audience at home, telling them: “Don’t write into me,” as he made light of his co-host’s geographical blunder.

Richard then turned back to Alexander and retorted: “Not really, no,” in reference to his earlier question, before Alexander went on to say: “I’m confusing…”

However, Richard jumped in, teasing Alexander once more by finishing his remark, saying: “Yourself and others.”

As the audience and contestants burst into laughter, Alexander reiterated in a light-hearted manner: “I’m confusing myself and others.”

The host then carried on with the rest of the show which saw Angela and her daughter Sara the first pair knocked out of the quiz show.

However, Alexander’s blunder didn’t go unnoticed by viewers at home as one posted on Twitter after Alexander’s confusion: “Bournemouth & Southampton aren’t even in the same county, let alone the same place! #pointless.”

With two more pairs knocked out along the way, it was Jordan and Ben who went on to win the jackpot of £1,000.

Though, some of the couples will have another chance to get their hands on some more cash later on in the week as they will return to face Alexander and Richard’s pointless questions again.

On yesterday’s show, Richard was left stunned by one contestant’s answer, rather than teasing his co-host about his geographical knowledge.

As contestant Jane was quick off the mark and ready with an answer for the hosts, Richard remarked: “That was tense.”

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
