Presenter Jamie Weir was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to report on Spurs’ first match at their new home.
Tottenham fans were given the opportunity to explore their news digs hours before this evening’s match with Crystal Palace as the stadium opened at 4:45pm.
Weir said: “The fans are beginning to come through in their dribs and drabs they will get the full experience.
“Daniel Levy has spoken about wanting this to be the best fan experience in the land.”
But the segment was marred when a Tottenham fan shouted “Y*d army” at the top of their voice.
The word y*d has historically been used derogatorily towards the Jewish community, which Tottenham have a strong connection to.
And moments after the fan’s use of the word was heard, Weir hastily issued an apology.
He said: “Apologies if there were any language or use of the Y word. Spurs fans are very excited to finally, after almost 600 days, to be back home.”
When the segment ended, Sky Sports presenter Jim Davies also apologised for the fan’s language.
He said: “Apologies for the language on that live broadcast.”
Tottenham’s new home cost a staggering £850million to construct, over double its original budget.
The Spurs board are hoping it’ll usher in a new era for the north Londoners, with chairman Daniel Levy believing it’ll take the club to a new level.
“Winning is both on the pitch and off the pitch, so we are going to keep going until we get both right,” said Levy.
“I would say that in the last 18 years, this club has definitely gone forward and clearly, like any business, any club, you have your ups and downs.
“When I took over the club, Tottenham was not a club that was a regular European challenger.
“Clearly, we are now and my dream is obviously to win. We want to win.”
