What Unai Emery can tell Arsenal chiefs after proving doubters were WRONG – Craig Burley

That is according to ESPN FC pundit and former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley.

Emery has led Arsenal to third in the Premier League table with seven games of his first season remaining.

The Gunners are also in the quarter-final of the Europa League, where they face Italian side Napoli.

Emery signed a three-year contract to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal head coach last summer.

Reports claimed there was a break clause in the contract, meaning Emery can be relieved of his duties after two years if the club were not happy with the job he has done.

Burley believes qualifying for the Champions League will give Emery more power in the transfer market this summer.

And he has been impressed with the impact the Spaniard has made in north London.

“If he gets them into third or fourth, Champions League football, all of a sudden he can go to them [the board] and say ‘we’re on the front foot here, let’s not take a backwards step, this is what we need to do, we need to spend this, this and this and this is the areas that we need to improve’,” Burley said.

“And he’s got a much better chance of doing it with Champions League football and selling to his owners that he is the man for the job.

“He’s not got a long, long contract at Arsenal.

“I believe there is a get-out in there, for the club after a couple of years.

“I think he signed a three-year deal, I believe, and I heard somebody say there is a clause after two years that if it’s not going well they can sort of get rid of him.

“I might be wrong in that, I don’t know.

“I’ve said it because I heard somebody talking about his contract and he’s got a clause in it which tells you that they’re not entirely sure at the time of the appointment about the long-termism of this.

“What I’m saying is he’s on the front foot and he is impressing, there’s no doubt about it.”
