James Harden: What Rockets fans did in final seconds of Kings win is pure class – PICTURES

The point guard went off for a 50-point triple-double, adding 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Rockets to a 119-108 win over the Kings.

That ensured Harden secured his fifth career 50-point triple-double to mark a new NBA record.

The reigning league MVP had his ninth game of the season in which he scored at least 50 points and also his 28th in which he 40-or-more.

The 29-year-old was 13-of-31 from the field and seven-of-23 from beyond the arc at Toyota Center.

And the Houston fans paid homage to another phenomenal night from their superstar leader as the entire arena rose to their feet with 30 seconds left of the fourth quarter to celebrate another unforgettable night.

The six-time All-Star is now behind only Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain for the most 50-point games of all time.

Bryant has seven more, while Jordan is 11 ahead with 31 but Chamberlain is well out in front having managed the feat a staggering 118 times.

Harden is enjoying a phenomenal season, having earlier gone 32 straight games scoring at least 30 points.

Remarkably, he has managed at least 30 points against all 29 of the Rockets’ opponents in the league this year.

The California native is the leading point-scorer in the NBA with a phenomenal 36.4 points per game, while he averages the seventh-most assists (7.5ppg) and second-highest number of steals. (2.1ppg) having played in 73 of Houston’s 76 games in 2018-19.

Harden’s scoring season is currently set to see him have the best points-per-game average in all but six seasons in NBA history.

Unsurprisingly, Los Angeles Lakers legend Chamberlain managed five of those while Michael Jordan averaged 37.1ppg in 1986-87 for the Chicago Bulls.

Harden is the front runner to retain his MVP award but faces competition from Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has led the Bucks to the No 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

In the West, Harden has helped pick the Rockets up from the bottom end of the West to take them to No 4 – which as it stands will pit them against the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs next month.

Houston have just five regular-season games remaining before they turn their attentions to the post-season, with a rematch with Sacramento next up on Tuesday night (9pm local/3am Wednesday UK time).
