Utrecht shooting LIVE updates: Gunman on the RUN as passengers shot on tram in Holland

  • The Utrecht shooting took place at about 10:45 local time (09:45 GMT) at the 24 Oktoberplein junction
  • Police say they are investigating a “possible terrorist motive” in the shooting
  • No arrests have been made and it is not clear how many are injured

Dutch police said several people had been injured on Monday after a gunman opened fire on a tram in the central city of Utrecht. Police said: “Several shots were fired in a tram and several people were injured. Helicopters are at the scene and no arrests have been made.” The Utrecht police said The October 21st square, a tram station stop outside the city centre, had been cordoned off as emergency services were at the scene. Tram services had been suspended as the hunt for the suspect continues. Here is all the latest on the Utrecht shooting – all times in GMT.

11.30am update: First victim reports being released

Three wounded people were reported to have been taken away from the scene and there are five ambulances on site, according to local media.

11.25am update: Police could be hunting more than one suspect

Several Dutch media outlets, including “AD”, now report there were multiple perpetrators.

The police have not confirmed this yet.

A woman, who was sitting inside a tram when the shooting broke out, told NRC a man had gotten up and started shooting at sitting passengers.

11.21am update: Police looking for a terrorist motive

Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security reports the NCTV is meeting because a terrorist motive cannot be ruled out.

A source says shots may also have been fired at other locations and the police are looking into it.

11.17am update: No information on injured

University Medical Centre Utrecht has created a room as an emergency hospital for the victims.

Police have not released any information on these injured as yet and numbers are unclear as the manhunt continues.

11.14am update: Police looking for a red car

No arrests have been made yet, but there is a suspect who may have escaped in a car, according to a police source.

Sources told RTV Utrecht the police are looking for a red car – possibly a Renault Clio – and several people were seriously injured.

Because of a trade union action day, many police cars were en route to Malieveld.

Gerrit van de Kamp, of the ACP police union, said: “There was a group of about 70-80 police, ambulance and fire brigade vehicles near Utrecht heading for a demonstration about pensions.

“They stopped and headed to the incident to help.”

11.10am update: Dutch PM Rutte speaks out on “Worrying situation”

Prime Minister Rutte has just spoken about a “worrying” situation in The Hague and is going to consult with the convening crisis team.

He added he would be holding crisis talks after police claimed the shooting may have held a “terrorist motive”.

Counterterrorism and Security Coordinators are also looking into the shooting, it has been confirmed.

11.00am update: Witnesses report seeing victims lying on the floor after the shots were fired

Jimmy de Koster told RTV Utrecht: “I am standing at the traffic lights on 24 October Square and I see a woman lying down, I think she is between 20 and 35.

“At that moment I heard pang pang pang three times, four men walked very fast towards her and they tried to drag her away and then I heard pang pang pang again and those guys let go of that woman again.”

Reporter Yelle Tieleman added: “Still unclear how many victims. Emergency services are massively present in the tram, which stands still at 24 Octoberplein.

“Victims are [being] taken from the tram and rushed to the hospital.

“Police are looking hard for the perpetrator. A spokesperson has just confirmed that it has escaped.”
