Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast star sets himself up for Strictly by dancing for Shirley Ballas

Dan Walker brought a smile to Shirley Ballas’ face when he attempted the Paso Doble during a break from climbing Kilimanjaro. The BBC Breakfast presenter also made the Strictly Come Dancing head judge laugh when he performed for her beside some trees. Shirley, 58, was in the middle of an interview for Comic Relief when the cheeky 41-year-old journalist interrupted. Calling out to her, he held open a large red cloth and asked: “Are these the bed blankets?

“Shirley where else do you get a gingham bed blanket, hey? Look what I’ve managed to find for you here.”

Throwing the cover over his shoulders, he exclaimed: “This could be a cape, could do a bit of Paso Doble with this.”

He then burst into dance, flaring his arms about wildly as he tried to impress the professional dancer.

His moves delighted Shirley, who laughed throughout the entire performance, before saying: “That’s funny!”

The two joined forces to raise money for Comic Relief by scaling the highest mountain in Africa with a host of famous faces.

Little Mix’s Jade Thirwall, 26, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 27, also took part in the challenge, as did former Labour MP Ed Balls, 52, and Love Island 2018 winner Dani Dyer, 23.

Earlier in the month, Dan opened up about some of the “battles” he and his fellow co-stars faced climbing Kilimanjaro.

Sharing a picture of himself with the likes of Shirley and Ed on Instagram, he told his 64,7000 followers: “Still can’t quite believe we did this.

“Despite a 36-year age range this amazing bunch made it to the top of Kilimanjaro.”

He went on to say the group fought “exhaustion, altitude sickness, fatigue and all sorts of other battles” when they climbed up the mountain.

He continued: “We all made some friends for life but, more importantly, we’d love to raise an amazing amount of money for @comicrelief.”

The father-of-three ended the message by encouraging his followers to donate to the worthy cause and support Red Nose Day.

When uploading the picture to the photo-sharing website, he also shared a few more images from the once in a lifetime adventure.

In one of photographs, Dan is seen placing a tender arm on Shirley’s shoulder during the mountain trek.

Beside him stood retired politician Ed, who trailed behind singers Jade and Leigh-Anne.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
