Liverpool player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Van Dijk imperious, Mane class but who got a 4?

Jurgen Klopp’s men secured their place in the next round of the Champions League with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring with a brilliant turn and finish from Virgil van Dijk’s long ball, leaving Manuel Neuer stranded on the edge of his area.

Bayern got back into the game before half-time when Joel Matip turned Serge Gnabry’s cross into his own net under pressure from Robert Lewandowski.

However, Virgil van Dijk slammed a thunderous header home from James Milner’s corner to put the Reds ahead then Mane added a third from close range with just minutes remaining.

Express Sport has rated how the Liverpool players performed against Bayern Munich, but do you agree?

Liverpool player ratings vs Bayern Munich – Champions League

GK: Alisson – 6

Held on to a long-range free-kick but was left helpless for Matip’s own-goal.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6

Had his work cut out dealing with Franck Ribery but kept tabs on the experienced Frenchman.

CB: Joel Matip – 5

Not great on the ball but made some solid tackles before his unfortunate own-goal.

Went in the book for one too many clumsy challenges on Robert Lewandowski but was resolute as Bayern pressed in the closing stages.

CB: Virgil van Dijk – 9

Imperious once again, winning nearly everything in the air and showing great poise on the ball.

His long pass freed Mane, although the Senegalese forward still had plenty to do in order to open the scoring.

Then rose above the masses to smash home a header from Milner’s corner and put his side ahead.

LB: Andrew Robertson – 4

Worked Manuel Neuer with a strong drive but was badly caught out by Gnabry for Bayern’s equaliser.

Went to sleep again in the second half but Gnabry’s cross wasn’t turned home before the Scot compounded a poor night by picking up a yellow card and a subsequent suspension for the first leg of the quarter-final.

CM: Jordan Henderson – N/A

Clipped on the ankle in the opening exchanges and was forced off after 13 minutes.

CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 6

Little time on the ball in a disjointed match, but got through plenty of work disrupting the host’s passing game.

CM: James Milner – 6

Wayward in possession during the first half, although both sides struggled to build sustained periods of pressure.

Showed plenty of running down the left but failed to hit the danger zones with his crosses until a hanging corner found Van Dijk.

RAM: Mohamed Salah – 7

More defensive than usual, putting in an excellent shift to cover Alexander-Arnold.

Good pace breaking from midfield and looked a threat on the counter, although he missed his best chance of the match when Rafinha and Niklas Sule combined to deny the Egyptian.

LAM: Sadio Mane – 8

Outrageously good touch to draw Neuer out then showed brilliant instincts to dink his finish past the covering defenders.

Always seemed dangerous on the ball as his unpredictable runs caused Bayern plenty of problems and then made the match safe with a diving header late on.

ST: Roberto Firmino – 6

Hit one effort narrowly wide but found himself too deep for much of the match.

SUB: Fabinho (on for Henderson, 13 mins) – 6

Made an instant impact with a late challenge on James Rodriguez and got through plenty of work defensively.

Another one guilty of being poor on the ball but got better as the match progressed and was a reassuring physical presence.

SUB: Divock Origi (on for Firmino, 82 mins) – N/A

Allowed the Brazilian a rest but didn’t see much of the ball.

SUB: Adam Lallana (on for Milner, 86 mins) – N/A

Helped close the game out.
