Captain Marvel first reactions: THIS is what critics have to say about Captain Marvel

Though reviews are still under embargo, critics who have seen Captain Marvel took to Twitter to share their reactions. Captain Marvel is out in cinemas in the UK on March 8, 2019. Until then, anxious can breathe easy — responses to the Brie Larson helmed Captain Marvel have been good.

Erik Davis, Managing Editor at Fandango:

“Captain Marvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really.

“It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places & badass in all the right places.

“It remains entertaining because it’s always changing. It’s got the right stuff.

“Love the cat, love Sam Jackson, LOVE Ben Mendelsohn, but honestly I’m calling Lashana Lynch as MVP.

“She brings an emotional weight to the film that is needed and transforms the entire movie upon arrival. Definitely need to see more of her.”

Jacki Jing for IGN

“Captain Marvel had space battles, car chases, an amazing 90s soundtrack and an ADORABLE cat!

“A surprisingly fun script – laughed so much!!! Great to finally see this kick-butt heroine in action”

Eric Eisenberg for CinemaBlend:

“Captain Marvel is a blast! Has some cool surprises that I definitely didn’t see coming, and the mystery/origin it weaves is engaging and fun.

“Brie Larson is awesome and makes a fantastic first step into the MCU. Oh, and yes, Goose is a brilliant scene-stealer”

Ash Crossan for Entertainment Tonight:

“#CaptainMarvel is (takes a deep 90s breath) TOTALLY AWESOME. Never related to a Marvel character quite like Carol.

“She’s the stubborn witty 90s kid I like to think I am.”

Sonaiya Kelley for the Los Angeles Times:

“Captain Marvel is an effective Avengers prequel in some ways akin to the 1st Captain America movie.

“It’s pro-woman without being overdone with pre and post-credit scenes that made me tear up and gave me goosebumps respectively”

She added: “the two post-credits scenes that are worth staying for and the anticipation for ENDGAME is definitely stoked by this film”

Steven Weintraub for Collider:

“CaptainMarvel is a welcome addition to the MCU. The movie is really well done with some great moments.

“Ben Mendelsohn steals almost every scene he’s in. Brie Larson literally shines in the role. So ready for Avengers: Endgame”

Mike Ryan for Uproxx:

“Captain Marvel isn’t what I expected based on marketing. It’s pretty much an “all in” cosmic space movie.

“Also, it’s a lot weirder than I expected. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome as Talos.”

“And not wacky weird like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Think more “Rey snapping into endless mirrors” from The Last Jedi type scenes.

“Also, finally, the MCU and a Nirvana song come together (as Kurt Cobain wanted).

I can’t get over how great Ben Mendelsohn is. I was worried he was just going to be one of those Marvel villains with alien makeup, but that’s not the case at all. This movie doesn’t work without him.”
