Warner Bros has had a winner with their underwater adventure Aquaman. The studio’s adaptations of DC Comics movies have all but been flops. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is one of the only hugely successful DC Extended Universe films to come from the studio. Until now.
Is there a release date for Aquaman 2?
Yes, Warner Bros have just announced the release date for the DC Comics adaptation.
Aquaman 2 will be out in UK cinemas on December 16, 2022.
With a 2022 release date, fans will have to wait four years for the sequel.
Warner Bros has plenty of DC content for fans to look forward to.
In 2019, fans of Batman will get to see the Joker origin story.
Birds of Prey (Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is out in February 2020.
Wonder Woman: 1984 is out June 2, 2020, followed by The Batman on June 25, 2021.
Suicide Squad 2 has a release date of August 6, 2021.
As for Aquaman 2, Deadline reports: “Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Warner Bros tapped frequent James Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to pen the sequel.
“Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote Aquaman with Will Beall. James Wan and Peter Safran are producing.”
There is also an Aquaman spin-off of sorts in the works from Warner Bros.
The film will be title The Trench and is being written by newcomer screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.
The Trench will reportedly have a horror movie aesthetic and will follow a new creature in DC Comics lore.
The Trench did, in fact, appear briefly in the Aquaman movie, going after Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard).
Given Aquaman is the highest grossing DC film of all-time for the studio, a sequel was almost guaranteed.
As far as competition for Aquaman 2, the only other major studio release coming out over the same weekend is from Disney.
Disney’s mystery project is reportedly a live action film.
Illumination Animation has an untitled film that’s set to open on Wednesday, December 21, which should not impact Aquaman too highly.
Aquaman 2 is out in cinemas on December 16, 2022.
