Oscars winners 2019: Bohemian Rhapsody wins MOST – plus Olivia Colman, Green Book shocks

Bohemian Rhapsody got off to a strong start when it won both Sound Mixing and Sound Editing; winning Best Editing soon after.

In fact, Best Picture was the only one of its nominations that didn’t come to fruition, as Malek’s Best Actor triumph gave it more silverware than any other movie this year.

Elsewhere, Colman helped save The Favourite from humiliation: despite ten nods, there was a moment where it looked as though it would go home completely empty-handed.

In the supporting acting categories, things went as expected: Regina King won for her incredible turn in If Beale Street Could Talk, while Mahershala Ali won his second Oscar in three years – this time for Green Book.

Roma still won three prizes despite losing Best Picture.

Alfonso Cuaron’s beautiful Netflix film took home Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography and Best Director.

Black Panther also won thrice: for Best Make-Up And Hairstyling, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.

The hugely acclaimed caper Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature; leaving Disney and Pixar with a rare loss in that field.

Lady Gaga was tearful as she collected her first Oscar. She may have missed out on Best Actress but Shallow from A Star Is Born helped her scoop Best Original Song.

First Man won Best Visual Effects, Vice won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Bao won Best Animated Short, Skin took Best Live Action short, Free Solo bagged Best Documentary Feature and Period. End Of Sentence. was the much-loved recipient of Best Documentary – Short Subject.

In the writing categories, Green Book won for Original Screenplay – helping bring the movie’s overall tally up to three.

And Spike Lee had the audience cheering as he took Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman.

It was a ceremony without a host, after Kevin Hart stepped down over past homophobic tweets, and subsequent backlash over his apologies.

The raft of guests hosts included Julia Roberts, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Amandla Stenberg, Tessa Thompson, Michael B Jordan, James McAvoy, Danai Gurira and many more.

Musical performances came from the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Queen and Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler.
