Cadbury Mini Eggs warning: Mum urges parents to watch out after daughter ‘chokes to death’

Filled with milk chocolate and containing a crispy sugar shell, Cadbury chocolate Mini Eggs are often a go-to sweet treat during the Easter season. However, the size of the chocolate pieces make them unsuitable for young children. A visible warning about this is clearly marked on the back of the packets, stating that they are not suitable for children under the age of four. Last year, a mother decided to recall her harrowing ordeal, after her daughter, Sophie, tragically choked on the treat.

With the youngster sadly not surviving the incident, the mum urged other parents to be extra cautious.

Writing on the website Mumsadvice.co.uk, the unnamed woman penned: “With Easter coming up I want to warn you all about another deadly choking hazard, one that tragically took away my child.

“It has been just short of three years since my precious little girl Sophie passed away.

“She had choked on a mini egg and I was unable to dislodge it, even with back slaps and pushing up under her ribs, I had done a first aid course one six months prior to this event so all the techniques to help a choking child were still fresh in my mind but it didn’t help.”

Cadbury warned consumers the product could be a choking hazard and therefore not suitable for children under the age of four, however young Sophie was five-years-old.

Remembering the heartbreaking moment, the Mumsadvice user continued: “I watched the light slip from my baby’s eyes, I tried in vain to save her.”

The writer of the post went on to plead with parents to supervise their little ones when enjoying the chocolate treat.

She also recommended that the youngsters are seated when eating them – or simply do not have the sweet snack.

The mum wrote: “If your children enjoy these chocolate treats please watch them extra close and remind them to sit down whilst eating them or avoid them altogether.

“If just one person reads this and watches their toddler, child or teen extra close when eating these my daughter’s death will not be in vain,” she added.

“I would love to have them removed from the shelves but I know this will not happen, but getting parents to be extra vigilant is the best I can do, please watch your babies.”

A spokesperson for Cadbury told Express.co.uk: ““We were saddened by this tragic event as the safety of our customers is of the upmost importance to us.

“We ensure that all of our Cadbury Mini Eggs packaging very clearly carries the following warning: Choking Hazard: This product is Not suitable for children under 4.”

Easter Sunday falls on Sunday April 21 this year.

The gifting of chocolate eggs in celebration of Eastertide is a modern custom, as a substitute to an older tradition of giving decorated chicken eggs.
