Green MEPs arrested after breaking into military base – 'Europe WITHOUT nuclear arms!'

Molly Scott Cato, MEP for the South West of England, Michèle Rivasi from France, and Tilly Metz from Luxembourg scaled the perimeter fence to unveil a banner which read “Europe free of nuclear weapons” before being taken into custody.

The group of activists had been demonstrating at the base as it is believed to be the location where up to 20 American B61 nuclear bombs are held, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

After succeeding in entering the base, Ms Scott Cato wrote on Twitter: “I have been arrested for breaking into a Belgian military airbase to protest against the stockpiling of American nuclear bombs. Our message from the runway was clear. #nuclearban #globalban”

Prior to the protest, Ms Scott Cato highlighted the dangers of these chemical weapons which she claims are “23 times more powerful than the bomb that devastated Hiroshima” in 1945 and the “apocalyptic weapons should find no home in Europe”.

In the statement the 55-year-old added: “We demand that Europe’s nuclear nations immediately sign up to the landmark global Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and begin the process of decommissioning their nuclear arsenals.

“Nuclear weapons are obsolete in an era of asymmetric warfare and cyber warfare and have no place in a European defence policy for the 21st century.

“Britain and France have ignored their obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons for far too long.”

French MEP Ms Rivasi reiterated the call for denuclearisation.

She said: “We are demanding the withdrawal of nuclear bombs at Kleine Brogel and also from Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.

“We urge all EU member states to sign and ratify the treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons. Our first objective is a Europe without nuclear arms.”

This protest comes in light of the decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF) earlier this month.

The treaty signed in 1987 banned the US and Russia banned from using short and medium-range missiles, however the move has raised the prospect of more unrest between the two superpowers.

During the announcement Mr Trump said: “We cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other.”

Meanwhile Green co-leader Sian Berry backed the protestors adding the party “stand in full solidarity” with their colleagues and condemned the use of the weapons which “have the potential to kill millions of people”.

Ms Berry said: “We stand in full solidarity with our brilliant MEP Molly and her Green colleagues who have been arrested for taking a stand against nuclear weapons.

“These bombs have the potential to kill millions of people.

“They make us less safe, are obsolete in modern warfare and are a colossal waste of money.

She added: “It is only right all US nuclear weapons are removed from Europe.

“Greens are never afraid to put their bodies on the line for what is right.

“These Green MEPs will be found on the right side of history for the principled actions they have taken.”
