Newcomer Louis Ashbourne Serkis plays the modern day Arthur, aka Alex Elliot.

Tom Taylor (Doctor Foster) plays Lance, one of Alex’s friends named after Lancelot.

Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson plays Morgana “Morgan” le Fay.

Morgana is an evil sorceress and old enemy of Merlin, her half-brother King Arthur, and all of Camelot.

Patrick Stewart plays the wizard Merlin, who decides to keep watch over Alex.

To do this, Merlin the wizard takes the form of a teenager to blend in with the other teenagers.

As a teenager, Merlin is played by Angus Imrie, who is best known for his role in The Archers.

Other cast members include Dean Chaumoo as Bedders, Rhianna Dorris as Kaye, Denise Gough as Mrs Elliot, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Sophie, Alex’s Aunt.

For Vulture, Emily Yoshida wrote: “Cornish is offering a kind of movie they just don’t make anymore — expansive live-action adventure tales unabashedly aimed at young people, not the adults charged with taking them to the cinema.”

So perhaps its worth it to take the family to the cinema to see this highly rated Arthurian adaptation.

The Kid Who Would Be King is now playing in cinemas.
