Four people were injured in the horrific attack as the suspect began knifing people at random, French news site actu17 reports.
Police rushed to the scene and shot the man dead after he drew a gun and pointed it at officers.
The condition of the four victims is not yet known.
A large security perimeter is in place and national police are urging residents to avoid the area.
The knife attack comes amid a heightened state of alert in France after the country was hit by several of deadly terror attacks.
