Karl Lagerfeld: Chanel creative director's life in pictures

Karl Lagerfeld, one of the most well-known fashion designers of our generation, has died at the age of 85 according to reports in the French media.

The German-born fashionista, who lived in Paris, worked as the creative director of French fashion house Chanel from 1983 until his death.

The iconic designer, who began his career as Pierre Balmain’s assistant in 1955, also worked for Fendi, Chloe and high street store H&M over the years.

The talented artist, who was easily recognisable thanks to his signature white hair and chic look which comprised of a high collar shirt and tie worn with a pair of dark sunglasses, was often pictured with world famous supermodels and movie stars who loved to wear his designs.

Tributes have been pouring in from the fashion industry for the much-loved star from fellow designer Donatella Versace to Chanel muses Diane Kruger and Lily Allen.

The Italian fashion designer wrote on Instagram: “Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”

According to Closer Magazine in France, the designer has been ill for a number of weeks and missed Chanel’s haute couture show in Paris last month.
