Kevin Durant: Warriors star wants to join New York Knicks to build an EMPIRE – NBA expert

That’s according to Fox Sports’ NBA expert Nick Wright.

Durant’s Thirty Five Ventures company is in the process of moving into a new office building in New York City – where his business partner and manager Rich Kleiman lives.

The back-to-back Finals MVP has been linked with the Knicks given he has the player option to leave the Golden State Warriors in the upcoming offseason.

Durant has won two championships in as many seasons in the Bay Area and the Warriors are widely expected to ’three-peat’ and win a third straight title this year.

But the 29-year-old has been criticised for joining a team that was already regarded as having the best roster in the league with three All-Stars in Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green when he left the Oklahoma City Thunder three years ago.

With Durant seemingly keen to cement his legacy as one of the best players in NBA history, the Warriors superstar has been tipped to depart Golden State, become a free agent and take a lesser team to the title.

The Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers are alternative destinations, as another NYC team in the Brooklyn Nets could also be, but the Knicks – without a title since 1971 – look to present an ideal scenario for Durant and Wright believes off-court opportunities means the Big Apple is exactly where the 10-time All-Star is headed.

He told Undisputed: “NBA fans need to recognise that for an echelon of player – of which there’s a very select few, LeBron [James], KD, Steph and that might be it – it is not just about basketball decisions.

“It is about, ‘Where can I build my empire?’ And Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman have been planning to build their empire in New York City.

“It’s an added bonus that the basketball part of it is a legacy-builder as well if he does what he thinks he can do.

“That show they do digitally on ESPN+ is not about basketball, The Boardroom, it’s about shark-tank stuff.

“Durant is interested in building a non-basketball, quarter of a $1bn industry around him and New York City is the place he is going to do it.”

And Wright’s fellow Undisputed analyst Cris Carter thinks Durant is making similar moves to the pieces LeBron James put in place before his move to Los Angeles to join the Lakers.

Carter added: “Off the court, Durant’s done some phenomenal things from a charity standpoint. He’s got some awesome business concepts moving forward. He’s going to make a lot of money off the basketball court. Where do you want to do these things?

“LeBron didn’t go to L.A. just for the Lakers. The business component, what they’re trying to do beyond basketball, it played into it.

“They can change their minds but from a business standpoint, how he’s getting things set up – no different than how LeBron had everything set up.

“When LeBron announced the first day of free agency, he didn’t have to buy a house [in L.A.], he already had a couple houses.

“They already had stuff set up. He already had people who had been in Los Angeles a couple years, his business partners. This is where it’s going.”
