Since the release of the first movie back in 2013, Elsa – voiced by Idina Menzel – has been adopted as something of a gay icon. Fans have been calling for the character to be the first animated person in Disney’s canon to have a same-sex love interest. Can it actually happen?
Star Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, may have dropped a big hint.
A new female character was briefly glimpsed in the teaser, and fans have been speculating over who it may be.
Bell responded very cryptically to one fan, who has “GIVE ELSA A GIRLFRIEND” in their username.
They tweeted: “who is SHE”, and Bell responded coyly: “Hmmmm…..”.
While she could, of course, merely be stoking excitement over who it could be, the fact that this character has been specifically speculated to be Elsa’s girlfriend could make her post somewhat telling.
Bell herself has spoken out in the past about calls for Elsa to be given a same-sex romance.
“Whatever Elsa wants to do is up to her and it’s up to us to support her,” she told Tyler Oakley in 2016.
Menzel said: “I cannot confirm or deny!
“I think in Frozen she was young and so she’s still figuring stuff out.”
The trailer has gone down incredibly well online, with fans praising the darker tone and impressive animation.
The first movie became a global phenomenon when it was released in 2013.
Frozen 2 is out on November 22.
