Mark Kent has said that there must be a “more modern” relationship between Argentina and the UK. The two countries have faced bitter clashes for years as Argentina has repeatedly said they want to claim the Falklands, which are claimed by the British, as their own islands.
Speaking in an interview for Clarin newspaper, Mr Kent said: “Our position is to support the right of self-determination of the islanders, but in a more modern relationship, we can not only exchange diplomatic notes, such as protest ones, we must find solutions and take action.”
Mr Kent said both countries need to work together to stop illegal fishing in the Argentine Sea.
He also said: “Apart from the dispute over sovereignty, there is interest from both the Argentines and the islanders to collaborate in the protection of fishing stocks.
“What has been done since last year is a combination of scientists from Argentine, the UK and the islands, exchanging information, because we have to have a clear vision of the threat to the fish stocks.
“If we do not act together, we will not have more fishing in the oceans, so instead of sending notes on sovereignty, the important thing is to protect the sea.”
“In the coming weeks, we will do the search and rescue exercises in the South Atlantic between Argentine and British officers, very important for the large number of cruises.”
Last year, Argentina’s Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said he wanted to establish a dialogue with the UK to solve the Falkland Island dispute.
He also said Buenos Aires wanted to improve cooperation with London and have closer relations.
Argentina has attended UN meetings to highlight the need for negations with the UK to address the Falklands.
