Tensions between the two countries have escalated following mutual strikes between them. Trump has recently insisted he wants to keep troops in neighbouring Iraq in order to “watch Iran”. He hopes to maintain a military presence in the country despite withdrawing troops from Syria and Afghanistan.
In an excerpt of his State of the Union address, he said: “We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants Death to America and threatens genocide against the Jewish People.”
Last month Israel admitted it had attacked Iranian military targets in Syria in what was one of the first times the state has taken responsibility for any strike on Syria.
Iran and Hezbollah are sworn enemies to Israel and have been crucial allies to Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad.
In a recent interview with CNN Trump said: “We have an unbelievable and expensive military base built in Iraq.

“It’s perfectly situated for looking at all over different parts of the troubled Middle East rather than pulling up.
“We’re going to keep watching and we’re going to keep seeing and if there’s trouble, if somebody is looking to do nuclear weapons or other things, we’re going to know it before they do.”
Trump’s comments were rejected by the current Iraqi President Bahram Salih.
He said: “The US presence in Iraq is a part of an agreement between the two countries with a specific task which is to combat terrorism.

“Don’t overburden Iraq with your own issues.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior Russian officials to discuss the tense relations in the region.
Israel and Russia do have a special line set up in order to maintain relations in the region.
The tensions in the region will likely be one of Trump’s key points in his State of the Union address.
