Man killed after BOMB exploded in New Mexico mall – FBI on the scene

The explosion occurred at 18.45pm UK (12.45pm local time) time by a mall in Albuquerque and there is not indication that anyone else has been hurt according to reports. The FBI is assisting local authorities with the local Police Chief Mike Geier confirming that “suicide” could have been the cause. The body was found in front of a dumpster following a “very loud” explosion.

Mr Geier said: “Our initial concern was that this was a gas leak or some natural causes. That was ruled out pretty quickly.”

“It appears to be some type of improvised explosive device that was used.”

Mr Geier also confirmed that no one else was hurt and that no other threats in the area have been found.

He did not confirm the identity of the body as police have yet to speak to the family.

As it stands, he speculated that “suicide was a possibility”.

Moreover, bomb squad officials rushed to the scene and businesses in the area were ordered to evacuate.

It is not yet known if the person was an employee or customer at one of the businesses in the mall.

Police officers blocked off the mall as businesses inside the building were evacuated.

Juan Pablo, a worker at one of the businesses, said the explosion shook the building.

He told local TV station KOB-TV: “I was in the backroom getting a phone for a customer right when I heard everything go off. It shook the windows.”

The area is an incredibly busy part of the town as it is a major intersection for people travelling home.

Police are asking locals to avoid the area.
