Mesut Ozil: Arsenal hero reveals Ozil's big problem under Unai Emery

That’s the view of Gunners hero Jens Lehmann, who has seen his German compatriot find life difficult under Unai Emery this season.

The midfielder has regularly been left out by Emery, with the Spaniard citing injuries and tactical reasons for dropping Mesut Ozil.

That has led to reports that the former Real Madrid star will leave Arsenal at the end of the season with Inter Milan potential suitors.

Arsenal pay Ozil £350,000 per week, making him the highest-paid player at the club.

And with the Gunners looking to free up some funds, getting Ozil’s wage bill off the budget could be key.

He hasn’t played since Boxing Day, having nursed a knee injury since then.

But Lehmann doesn’t expect Ozil to go to Emery looking for comfort or tips on how to improve.

“Our Germany mentality is sometimes different,” Lehmann told talkSPORT.

“We don’t ask our managers or coaches to put an arm around us.

“If you have a problem on the pitch, you’re expected to sort it out yourself.

“When I came to England, my English team-mates told me about their mentality that actually sometimes you need an arm around you and that the manager is supposed to help you on the pitch.”

And another Arsenal hero believes that Emery can do no more to help Ozil.

“I think Emery has done everything that he possibly can to get the best out of Ozil but it just doesn’t seem to be having a big enough impact,” Perry Groves said.

“Ozil is so obviously a great player, but the frustration is that he doesn’t do it on a regular basis and he tends not to perform against the bigger sides. You need to be doing that to justify his wages.

“Emery has tried to motivate Ozil by giving him the [captain’s] armband to demand more responsibility. He’s tried to motivate Ozil by dropping him for underperforming too.

“Emery has tried both ends of the spectrum and he must be a bit bewildered to have not got a reaction. The manager can only do so much.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Ozil leave at the end of the season.”

Arsenal take on Manchester United in the FA Cup tonight (7.55pm).
