Vikings season 5 spoilers: Lagertha's fate will be VERY unexpected – here's why

Vikings warrior queen Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick) has remained firmly one of the fantasy drama’s fan-favourite characters since the series began five years ago.

She has been through unimaginable war brutality and forced to witness the deaths of more than one of her lovers, but the white-haired beauty continues to come back with fire in her heart.

The second half of season five was a truly devastating time for the leader however, as she lost Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in devastating scenes.

The addition of the Hollywood actor was a major move for the hit TV show, but viewers were gobsmacked when the character was killed after such a brief stint on the show.

In mourning and struggling in other aspects of her life, Lagertha disappeared from the series, and when she returned she was sporting a very different look, having aged dramatically.

But will bosses ever actually make the decision to kill off the mesmerising character? Or will she continue to thwart death in the Viking lands?

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Asbjorn actor Elijah Rowen has shed light from his time on the Irish TV set.

Asked whether he thought Lagertha should meet a grisly end on the show, the star pointed out her recent ageing.

“The series is obviously set over quite a long span,” he began. “So Lagertha I don’t know, I think they try and keep that sort of thing vague, the age thing, because obviously they’re not going to change the actor when people get attached.

“But I guess Lagertha’s probably about 50 now, and I know that her hair is now white, and I think it’s the first time – the second half of the season her hair became white instead of blonde.”

Elijah continued: “I don’t know what, it seems when characters sort of do the same, and Ragnar [Lothrok], the beard kept getting bigger and then he was bald.

“It seems like when you keep getting older and older, as in real life, you’re definitely getting closer to death. But she’s treading very… you know she’s a fan-favourite.

“I think they probably just wanna keep her around somehow,” the star said with a laugh.

Elijah went on to tease he’d love to come back in the sequel, which is currently in development with the History Channel.

Joking about being resurrected as a completely new character, the star declared he didn’t mind as long as he could finally have the opportunity to weild an impressive weapon.

“I’d have to come back as a character who is a fighter and gets a decent weapon,” he mused. “They could even give me two of those tiny axes.

“I’m not sure why I was given such small axes [on the show], maybe I’m a small Viking!”

Reflecting on his exit from the hit show, Elijah was full of positivity for the writers’ decision-making.

“I think if they introduce new characters only to kill them all off,” the Irish actor began. “I think for instance the character killing me and Jack, and Chris, that now, he’s sort of taken some of our thunder in that way.

“He’s more interesting because he’s a killer and a murderer, so he’s sort of served a purpose in that way, but if they now just kill him off as well, then it would all seem for nothing.

“I don’t think they’re all gonna die, [and not Floki]. I think surely there has to at least be one boss to stick around to represent the Icelandic storylines, that’s my guess [for the ending],” the star added.

Vikings airs on the History Channel and Amazon Prime Video.
