Piers Morgan: GMB star saw Wayne Rooney 'just lying there gurgling' during bawdy night out

Piers Morgan poked fun at Wayne Rooney, as he reflected on a night out with the former England and Manchester United captain.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter revealed he got “blind drunk” with the 33-year-old football ace once in LA.

Describing the evening out as “one of the greatest dinners of all time,” he divulged: “He’d been drinking like a bloody gorilla – was swaying all over the place – and at the end stood up and promptly fell over.

“All the glasses went flying and Wayne fell back into an olive tree plant pot. He was just lying there, gurgling.”

He added to The Sun: “Coleen [his wife] was furious and dragged him home, except when I woke up at 6am the next morning, up popped a tweet from her saying they were still going at some nightclub in West Hollywood!

“So it’s not just Wayne who likes a drink, she’s just as bad.”

The journalist was speaking after the sportsman was arrested for public intoxication at Dulles International Airport in Virginia following a one-day trip to Saudi Arabia.

Wayne was hit with a misdemeanour charge on December 16 and reportedly paid a $21 fine and $91 costs on 4 January.

Of the incident, his spokesman said: “During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival.

“He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanour charge.

“He received a statutory automatic fine and was released shortly afterwards at the airport. The matter is now at an end.

“Wayne would like to put on record his appreciation for the manner he was treated by all involved.”

Also, The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office released a statement, which read: “He was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Centre on 16 December 2018, on a charge of public intoxication stemming from an arrest by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (MWAA).

“He was later released on a personal recognisance bond.”

Defending Wayne, Piers insisted: “I don’t think he has a drink problem in the way people think — he’s not like Gazza or George Best, where it’s a real problem.

“He doesn’t drink a lot, all the time, but when he drinks, he drinks a lot. I love Wayne, he’s having a great time out there.”

Wayne moved to America after signing a three-and-a-half year contract with DC United last year.

After confirming the deal, he said: “It is fantastic to be joining D.C. United at such an exciting time in the club’s history with the new stadium opening in just a few weeks.

“Moving to America and MLS fulfils another career ambition for me.

“I have the hunger to be a success here and will give D.C. 100 percent as I have always done for every team I have ever played for.”
