True Detective season three premiered on HBO on January 13, 2019 with eight brand new episodes. Season three has entirely new cast and story but appears to be heavily inspired by the critically-acclaimed first run. True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto again wrote all of the scripts for the new series. The gothic detective drama will air on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
Season three follows two partner detectives investigating a macabre crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas.
Spanning three decades, it is produced by season one stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
The synopsis from HBO reads: “The next instalment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Detective Wayne Hays – Mahershala Ali
Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali plays Detective Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
The drama will follow Hays’ investigation into the missing children case.
A trailer released this week sees hays feature prominently at different stages in his life.
Ali won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moonlight in 2016.
He played major character Remy Danton in Netflix’s House of Cards and also starred in season one of Luke Cage.

Roland West – Stephen Dorff
Playing Ali’s detective partner, Stephen Dorff will star as State Investigator Roland West.
West will also be a major part of the investigation that spans three decades.
The character can be seen in the trailer alongside Ali but doesn’t feature as much.
Dorff is known for his roles in films The Power of One, Blade and Somewhere.
He is also known for playing Britney Spears’ boyfriend in the Everytime music video.

Amelia Reardon – Carmen Ejogo
Carmen Ejogo stars as school teacher Amelia Reardon.
The teacher is somehow connected to the case involving the missing children in the series.
Ejogo is known for her roles in Selma, Alien: Covenant and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
She has also starred in It Comes At Night and The Purge: Anarchy.

Tom – Scoot McNairy
Scoot McNairy stars as Tom.
In the series, Tom is a father who suffers a terrible loss which ties his fate to that of two state police detectives over ten years.
Scoot McNairy is well known for playing the role of Gordon Clark in Halt and Catch Fire.
He also starred in season three of FX’s Fargo and in Netflix’s mini-series Godless last year.
