Anthony Martial: Man Utd make contract breakthrough, five-year deal agreement close

Martial’s contract was due to end in the summer but towards the end of last year, Manchester United triggered a 12-month extension clause.

Under Jose Mourinho, there were fears Martial would look to leave Old Trafford.

But since Mourinho’s sacking, Martial has been rejuvenated under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And it now appears he is ready to commit his future to the club.

Sky Sports claim there has been a breakthrough in discussions with Martial and his representatives after he rejected an offer in October.

And the report says the 22-year-old is on the verge of signing a new five-year contract.

This season, Martial has scored nine goals in 23 United appearances.

Speaking in an interview with Norwegian outlet TV2, Martial revealed he had been encouraged to “play to his strengths” by Solskjaer.

He said: ”He [Solskjaer] talked about a lot of different things when we were there.

“He told us about tricks that he picked up as a player, and how lucky we are to be a part of United.

“It’s been great for me to work with a manager who also was an attacker when he played.

“He gives me good advice, especially when it comes to positioning in front of goal and finishing technique. It’s helped me a lot.

“The best advice I’ve received from him is that I need to play to my strengths. He also told me not to put too much pressure on my self, and try to express myself on the pitch.”
