Ghostbusters 3: Will original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson play GHOSTS?

Thirty years on and a direct sequel to 1989’s Ghostbusters II is finally on the way from Jason Reitman, the son of the original films’ director. While Egon star Harold Ramis sadly died in 2014, the other three original Ghostbusters Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson appear likely to return. The trio cameoed in the 2016 female-led reboot, so presumably, they will reprise their roles as Peter, Ray and Winston in the film. But considering comments by Aykroyd and a focus on a group of teenagers in the plot, what if their characters are dead and have become ghosts?

He added: “It’s being written right now… I think Billy will come.

“The story’s so good. Even if he plays a ghost.”

If they did go the ghost route, it could be a way to pay tribute to the late Ramis.

Although it would obviously be a sensitive area for his family, friends and the fans, so Reitman would have to tread very carefully if he decided to include Egon in a way that honours Ramis.

But if not ghosts, hopefully, the original three with play older versions of their characters training up a new group of Ghostbusters.

Certainly, it would have a The Force Awakens feel to it, like when Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprised their Star Wars characters in the new movies focused on younger characters.

Whatever the case, it’s not a long wait until the next Ghostbusters movie, and hopefully, all being well, a new series of films.

Ghostbusters 3 is set for release in Summer 2020.
