Andy Murray soaks up the sun with mum Judy following Australia Open exit

Andy Murray went shirtless today, soaking up the sunshine in Melbourne following his early exit from the Australian Open 2019 tennis championship.

The 31-year-old British tennis star was pictured along with his mother Judy Murray, 59, sunbathing on the banks of the Yarra River following a monumental week in which he announced his plans for retirement.

The Gold-medal-winning sportsman, who has been plagued by a hip injury of late, revealed his intentions to retire this year during an emotional press conference held at the start of the tournament.

The Scottish star took to social media following the announcement to thank his fans and share his thoughts.

He told his 1.36 million Instagram followers: “Best way to feel better after a tough day is a big cuddle from your mum. Genuinely been very touched by all of the messages and support from everybody today… It means a lot and has made me feel much more positive than when I woke this morning. Thank you so much.”

The mother and son duo, who are clearly close, were seen laughing and chatting as they relaxed together today following the shocking news and first round match.

Judy was pictured enthusiastically cheering on her youngest son in the stands of the match against Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain on Monday afternoon.

Following his early defeat and speculation that he won’t make it to the British tournament in the summer, the former Wimbledon champion told the press, “If today was my last match, it was a brilliant way to finish.”

He thanked his fans on social media yesterday before heading home from the competition and wising his competitor the the best of luck for the future.

Andy said, “Thanks so much to everyone who came out to support tonight…It was an incredible atmosphere and I feel very lucky that I got to experience it. @australianopen I love you. Congrats to @robertobautistaagut and all the best for the rest of the tournament.”
