Surviving R Kelly: What is Mute R Kelly? What is the Mute R Kelly movement?

Crime+Investigation will be airing six-part series Surviving R. Kelly on February 5 with the first two episodes airing as a double bill. The remaining four episodes will be broadcast on a weekly basis thereafter. Surviving R. Kelly has caused much controversy since hitting screens earlier this month with the singer’s alleged victims speaking out against him. The documentary series has also led to the #MuteRKelly movement again coming into the spotlight.

R. Kelly has firmly denied all allegations of sexual, physical and emotional abuse with his lawyer threatening legal action against US network Lifetime.

What is the Mute R Kelly movement?

The Mute R Kelly movement seeks to get R. Kelly’s music banned from clubs, radio stations and concert bookings.

A short description on the organisation’s Instagram page, which is followed by close to 15,000 people, reads: “#MuteRKelly aims to end the financial support of R Kelly’s career.”

The official Mute R Kelly site also has a section urging people to get involved by signing and sharing a petition demanding Sony and Live Nation drop the singer as one of their artists.

HOW TO WATCH SURIVInG R KELLY DOCUMENTARY ONLINE

The Mute R Kelly movement was co-founded by Atlanta Arts administrator Oronike Odeleye and social justice activist Kenyette Barnes.

The women paired up after Odeleye started a petition in 2017 calling for a ban on R. Kelly’s music on radio stations in Atlanta.

She started the petition amid a resurgence in the allegations against R. Kelly in July 2017.

Barnes got in touch with Odeleye after she saw the petition and co-founded the movement together.

WHY IS R KELLY’S BROTHER IN JAIL?

Odeleye previously told The Grio: “We were outraged when we discovered that R. Kelly was scheduled to perform at a Fulton County owned facility in Atlanta.

“As a local government owned venue, we were upset that Fulton County would let a well-documented sex offender profit from our tax dollars and expanded the petition to include demands that the concert be cancelled.

“Kenyette coined the hashtag #MuteRKelly, and a nationwide movement was born.”

Surviving R. Kelly is thought to have been watched by around 20 million people earlier this month and is set to be viewed by many more when it airs in the UK.
