END OF WORLD? Plague of locusts descend on Mecca – shock images

A huge plague of locusts descended on Saudi Arabia’s third-biggest city of Macca this week. Saudis took to social media to post images and videos of the nightmare swarm as millions of the flying bugs landed. The city is Islam’s holiest site, where Muslim pilgrims travel every year.

The insects swarmed around cleaners who had been drafted in to eradicate stomach-churning volume of acrididae.

Locusts are biologically the same as grasshoppers and are usually solitary insects but occasionally swarm together under certain circumstances, such as when migrating.

Individually they pose no threat but when millions band together they can ravage fields and cause mayhem for farmers.

As the massive swarm descended on Mecca’s Grand Mosque, authorities said they had to bring in specially qualified pest exterminators to get rid of the pests.

Twitter user IYlassine records millions of the bugs crawling all over buildings and the floor with thousands of others flying all around him.

According to CCN, it took 22 teams consisting of 138 people to tackle the infestation.

Locusts are mentioned 36 times in the Bible, compared to just twice in the Quran.
