Apple iPhone boost as AirPower may finally launch this year

It’s been a long time coming but Apple could finally bring its AirPower charging mat to customers this year.

The clever device, which was first revealed back in 2017, offers one single solution to refilling numerous devices at once.

In fact, AirPower has the ability to wirelessly charge the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods all in one place reducing the need to have a bedside table littered with wires.

Since it was first unveiled at the iPhone event in September 2017, Apple has been quiet about when the charger will go on sale but now a new rumour suggests it could arrive soon.

In a post on Twitter, the team at ChargerLAB revealed: “AirPower is finally coming.

“We just learned from credible source in supply chain that the manufacture Luxshare Precision has already started producing Apple AirPower wireless charging pad.

“Luxshare Precision is also the maker of Apple AirPods and USB-C cables.”

It was hoped that Apple would launch the AirPower mat last year but some reports suggested the US technology firm was having issues with the device getting too hot.

Analysts then predicted that an early 2019 release could be a possibility and, if this latest news is true, that could become a reality.

Along with this new way of charging it’s also thought that Apple’s wireless AirPods will also get a refresh later this year which will include a case that’s compatible with the new charging technology.

The current AirPod headphones are charged without wires via their clever case but this box needs to be refilled via a lightning cable.

The update should mean that once the AirPods case is placed on the AirPower mat the battery inside will get an instant power boost.

As well as getting a wire-free refill, a Bloomberg report earlier this year hinted Apple could make the next version water resistant.

Citing people “familiar with the matter”, the publication insisted Apple plans to make the next iteration of the headphones able to withstand “splashes of water and rain”.

There’s no word on price for these new devices but don’t expect a bargain.

The original AirPods already cost £159 and some early rumours suggest the Airpower could arrive with a price of around £200.
