Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals reason for Alexis Sanchez conversations

Sanchez looks to have been left out of the Manchester United side to face Tottenham today after not travelling to London with the squad yesterday.

Sanchez has struggled with injury and form in the year since signing at Old Trafford, despite pocketing £500,000 a week.

He started the FA Cup tie with Reading and got an assist to follow the one he got against Newcastle when he was a second half substitute.

And Solskjaer admits he’s held talks with the Chile ace to try and help him find his feet again.

“Of course, he’s got high standards himself that you demand from yourself,” Solskjaer said.

“When it doesn’t work for you, as it clearly hasn’t and he’s had some injuries, then it’s difficult to suddenly click and put that confidence on.

“So [we’ve had] individual chats but, of course, it’s a fresh start for him with me and Mike [Phelan] coming in – it’s a new lease of life for him maybe.

“Hopefully we can see the best of him because he’s a top, top player.

“We’ve had the issue with his injury – that’s been the problem here now.

“So he’s not really had a chance to prove himself or show what he can do and it will still take time before we can fairly say that Alexis is 100 per cent fit and he’s had many games on the run.

“Then we expect to see the best level that he can perform to.”

United face Tottenham today with a chance to overtake Arsenal and go fifth – although they’d need to win by three goals.

Solskjaer has his first five games and a sixth – against Mauricio Pochettino – would enhance his chances of getting the job full time.

Pochettino remains the favourite but Gareth Southgate and Zinedine Zidane are in the running.
