Donald Trump accused of governing by ‘TEMPER TANTRUM’ by US Democrats in TV attack

Mr Schemer was responding to an Oval Office address from the President on the current US government shutdown. During his address Trump said: “To every member of Congress, pass a bill that ends this crisis. “This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice.”

The President described the border situation as a “crisis” but did not use the prime time TV address to declare a national emergency as some had expected.

Trump added “at the request of the Democrats it will be a steel barrier and not a concrete wall” along the US-Mexico border.

However, it is unclear which Democrats Trump believes are calling for a steel barrier.

The President added he had invited Congressional leaders to the White House for talks to “get this done”.

House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate minority leader, Mr Schumer, responded for the Democrats.

Ms Pelosi commented: “The President has chosen fear.”

Mr Schemer added: “Our suggestion is a simple one Mr President.

“Re-open the government and we can work to resolve our differences over border security. But end this shutdown now.”

The shutdown began at midnight on December 22 last year after Congress refused to provide Trump with $5billion to fund his proposed border wall.

An estimate 800,000 federal workers have either been told to stay away from work or are working without pay.

Yesterday Vice President Mike Pence tweeted: “The President is prepared to do what’s necessary to address what is a real humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.

“We need new resources. We need to build the wall.

“We need Congress to come to the table and work with this President to address this crisis once and for all.”

The shutdown is currently the second longest in US history, following the 21-day shutdown of 1995-6.

Yesterday, Vice President Mike Pence tweeted: “The President is prepared to do what’s necessary to address what is a real humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.

“We need new resources. We need to build the wall.

“We need Congress to come to the table and work with this President to address this crisis once and for all.”
