‘They will kill me’ Saudi teenager DETAINED in Bangkok after fleeing family

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, is being held in Bangkok by Saudi officials after running away from her abusive family. Ms Qunun, who denounced her faith in Islam, escaped from her family while on a trip in Kuwait two days ago. The teenager’s relative reported her travelling without a male guardian, and she is now being held in the Miracle Transit Hotel at Bangkok’s airport, after Saudi officials took her passport away. Writing on Twitter, Ms Qunun said: “My family is strict and locked me in a room for six months just for cutting my hair.

“I’m sure 100 percent they will kill me as soon as I get out of the Saudi jail.”

“I have been threatened by several staff from the Saudi embassy and the Kuwaiti airlines, and they said ‘If you run, we will find you and kidnap you, then deal with you’.

“I really don’t know how they are going to behave in case I run.”

According to her latest update on Twitter at 2.30 GMT, Ms Qunun said she was being watched by security officials who prevented her from leaving her hotel room.

In another tweet she said: “I have been detained in an airport hotel. I will be forcibly repatriated tomorrow to Kuwait and then Saudi.

“There is an airport person who constantly follows me. I can’t even ask for protection or asylum in Thailand. Thai police refuse to help me.”

Ms Qunun fled Kuwait to Bangkok, to seek asylum in Australia, claiming her family physically and psychologically abused her for years.

Her passport was forcibly taken from her by airport officials in Bangkok, preventing her from travelling.

Thailand’s immigration chief Surachate Hakparn told AFP: “She had no further documents such as return ticket or money.

“She ran away from her family to avoid marriage and she is concerned she may be in trouble returning to Saudi Arabia. We sent officials to take care of her now.”

However, Ms Qunun said she was accosted by Saudi and Kuwaiti embassy representatives when she got off her plane at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok.
