World War 3: Putin prepares to deploy ‘INVINCIBLE’ hypersonic missile system in New Year

The Russian leader, who has declared the Avangard system “invulnerable” to US defences, announced its imminent deployment after its finals tests. The trials took place in the Russia’s far eastern region at the Kura Missile Test range and were deemed a “complete success”. He said: “On my instructions the industrial enterprises and the Defense Ministry have prepared for and carried out the final test of this system.

“The test was completely successful: all technical parameters were verified.

“Starting from next year, a new intercontinental strategic system Avangard will enter service in the Russian army and the first regiment in the Strategic Missile Troops will be deployed.

“It’s a big moment in the life of the armed forces and in the life of the country. Russia has obtained a new type of strategic weapon.

“The Avangard is invulnerable to intercept by any existing and prospective missile defense means of the potential adversary.

“This will reliably ensure the security of our state and of our people for decades to come.

“This is a wonderful, excellent gift for the country for the New Year.”

The Avangard is a strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system equipped with a gliding hypersonic maneouvering warhead.

Compared to traditional warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles, which follow the ballistic trajectory towards their targets, the maneouvering glider warhead travels a part of its flight path at an altitude of several dozen miles in the dense layers of the atmosphere.

While moving along its flight path and by its altitude, the glider warhead is capable of bypassing the area of the missile defense’s detection and destruction capabilities.

The glider vehicle is about 5.4m long and develops a speed exceeding Mach 20. The warhead is either nuclear – ranging in size from 150 kilotonnes to 1 megatonne) or conventional.

According to Strategic Missile Force Commander Sergei Karakayev, the vehicle’s body is made of composite materials, which makes it resistant to aerodynamic heating of several thousand degrees and protects it from laser irradiation.

The vehicle is equipped with the thermoregulation system developed by the Nauka Research and Production Association.
