Bohemian Rhapsody: What the cast REALLY thought of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury

Bohemian Rhapsody is racing towards $700million at the global box office. Fans have embraced the Queen biopic and Rami Malek’s incredible performance. Band members Brian May and Roger Taylor have already paid tribute to the young actor, but what did his fellow castmates think? What was it like working with Rami every day? Gwilym Lee, Lucy Boynton and Joseph Mazzello are the ones who saw him every day on set and off.

How easy was it to believe he was Freddie Mercury when they saw him every day in and out of make-up and costume?

Gwilym Lee played Brian May and said: “Rami really set the tone on set. He never let the prospect of playing Freddie Mercury overwhelm him. He brought a positive celebratory attitude on set with him every day…

“It sent shivers up the spine the first time we saw his in full costumed make-up, and the first time was that Live Aid look which as so iconic.”

Joseph Mazzello, who played John Deacon, added: “When he out in the teeth and the prosthetics and the moustache it was another world. I was like ‘This is the coolest thing.’”

But Lucy Boynton, who played Freddie’s girlfriend Mary, paid tribute to how completely the young actor disappeared into the role.

She told Film 4: “When he would walk on as Freddie there would be not one per cent of Rami left. It just absolutely was (Freddie) so you stopped thinking about it as a transformation and you were just at work with this person Freddie.”

Fans, the band and the actors are all in agreement. It remains to be seen what the industry thinks.

Malek has started to rack up nominations for upcoming awards season. The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards have already delivered Best Actor nominations, amongst others, with many more sure to follow.

Before the film’s release, Malek admitted: “I like a challenge. This is probably the biggest one I’ll ever take and fingers crossed it works.”

There is no doubt that did…
