Toby Alderweireld set for £25m summer transfer after Tottenham contract decision

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Tottenham will trigger their option in Alderweireld’s contract to extend his deal until 2020.

But in doing so Alderweireld can leave the club next summer for £25m as long as the bid is made more than 14 days before the transfer window closes in August.

When asked if the club would trigger the extension Pochettino said: “Yes, for sure. It is obvious. It is the same situation as Jan (Vertonghen).”

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Manchester United but Tottenham have been hoping to agree fresh terms that would remove the £25m clause in his contract.

They could still agree a new deal to remove the clause, but the move to trigger Alderweireld’s contract suggests a deal is some way off.

Clubs are likely to enquire about a move in the coming transfer window where Tottenham can still demand a premium.

United made a move the 29-year-old in the summer but baulked at the £60m valuation, and are likely to come back in in January if the price is significantly lower.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho last week and has won his first two games, but United are still expected to add to their squad.

A move for Alderweireld would be controversial due to the pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino as the long-term replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Pochettino is the top target for Ed Woodward, and has refused to rule out a move so far.

Last week the Tottenham press officer stopped questions about the speculation during Pochettino’s press conference.
