The Queen’s speech: Royal shares rare glimpse of family portrait with one of her children

The Royal Family shared a festive photo of the Queen, 92, on Christmas Eve, to share a segment of her Christmas Day speech one day before it’s aired. The Instagram upload saw the Queen sat at the desk in her Drawing Room with a stunning Christmas tree behind her. Her Majesty wore an embellished sparkling silver dress for her annual speech, dazzling despite the shimmering Christmas decorations all around her. And to her right the Monarch had on display a candid family photo of herself and Prince Philip with their son Prince Charles as a baby.

The black and white photo was taken in 1949 when Queen Elizabeth II was 23-year-old Princess Elizabeth.

In the sweet snap, the young Queen can be seen grinning as she and Phillip both hold their baby in their arms.

Her Majesty no doubt chose to have it on show for her Christmas speech this year as Prince Charles had his milestone birthday in November.

The father of Prince William, 36, and Prince Harry, 34, turned 70 this year.

The candid photo wasn’t the only way the Queen paid tribute to her family members.

Pinned to her dress the Monarch wore a scarab brooch, which was a gift from her husband Prince Phillip in 1966.

The setting of the speech makes a change from last year, when the Head of State had on display photos of her great grandchildren Prince George, five, and Princess Charlotte, three.

Also in the background was a gilded piano by S&P Erard, which was supplied for Queen Victoria in 18656.

In the pre-recorded broadcast from Buckingham Palace’s white drawing room, she will call for “peace on earth and goodwill to all”.

The Queen will say: “Even with the most deeply-held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding.”

It is the last chance the Queen has to directly speak to the public before the UK leaves the EU on March 29 next year.

As head of the Church of England, the Queen has a strong sense of faith and will use her Christmas address to spread God’s message.

She will say: “I believe his message of peace on earth and goodwill to all is never out of date.

“It can be heeded by everyone; it’s needed as much as ever.”

Her Majesty will further use the speech to highlight the importance of family and friendship.

She will say: “Through the many changes I have seen over the years, faith, family and friendship have been not only a constant for me but a source of personal comfort and reassurance.”

Over the past year, the Queen has seen her own family grow with the Royal Weddings of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, as well as the birth of Prince Louis.

The address is written by the Queen and traditionally has a strong religious framework, mirroring her faith, which reflects on current issues and draws on her own experiences over the past year.
