As the temperature plummets during the winter, it can be hard for some people to fall asleep at night.
“Many of us would love to spend the winter months hibernating until the sun comes back out, and the darker nights and morning make it easier to do just that,” said Dr Pixie – sleep expert at bed retailer Dreams.
“Having said that, the cold weather that comes with winter can be a real barrier to sleep, and not everyone can afford to have the heating on at all hours.”
Dr Pixie shares her seven tips to help you drift off during the winter nights.
Use a hot water bottle

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.
The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.
Hot water bottles increase the temperature inside the bed, helping keep you warm as you nod off.
“Nothing beats a traditional method that has withstood the test of time,” said Dr Pixie.
Get fresh air
Getting outside during the day will get circulation going, while fresh air will ease breathing and prepare you for bed in the evenings.
Use extra thick duvets
Dr Pixie advises using different sheets and duvets for the summer and winter. In the winter use a double duvet set which will keep in more heat.
Do some light exercise
Simple and easy body stretches will raise your body temperature just enough to keep you comfortable and warm.
Avoid vigorous exercise before bed as this increases heart rate and will keep you awake.
Wear warmer clothing
Brushed cotton pyjamas and thermals will provide an essential layer of insulation to the body.
Block the draft
Block as many gaps in window and door frames as possible with a draft excluder or rolled-up towel. Thick curtains can also help minimise any drafts.
Cuddle your loved one
“Human body heat is one of the best natural sources of warmth, so if you are lucky enough to be sharing your bed with a partner then hold them extra tight as you’re trying to fall asleep,” said Dr Pixie.
