Man Utd news: Legend backed to become next permanent manager… NOT Solskjaer

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a full-time boss having sacked Jose Mourinho last week following a disappointing season.

United hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been placed in caretaker charge until the end of the season and got his spell off to a flying start with a 5-1 win over Cardiff yesterday.

Should positive results continue, Solskjaer will undoubtedly be in the running to take on the job on a permanent basis.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is reported as being the No 1 choice for Manchester United however that situation appears to be tricky.

And pundit Danny Murphy has backed United to give the job to current Wales manager Giggs.

“Although there is logic in Solskjaer’s temporary appointment, I don’t see him being United’s next permanent manager because it would require a dramatic turnaround — like winning a trophy or qualifying for the Champions League — that I feel is beyond them,” Murphy wrote for the Mail.

“Mauricio Pochettino ticks all the boxes for United and I’m sure he’s the one they’ll go for.

“He’d back his own ability as a coach to get a tune out of talents like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

“He also seems to be a loyal guy and if Ed Woodward has problems luring him away from Tottenham, I’d see the sense in giving the job to Ryan Giggs.

“He is not only the most decorated footballer in United’s history, he’s got a steeliness to cope with the pressure that comes with being at Old Trafford.”

Mourinho was sacked after reportedly falling out with Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

It came after Woodward failed to deliver on Mourinho’s wanted players which reportedly included the likes of Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.

And Peter Crouch believes Pochettino wouldn’t have the same issue from Woodward.

“Money will not be an object in Manchester,” Crouch said.

“The next permanent manager will be given all the backing he needs and the potential, if they get it right, is frightening for their opponents.

“Pochettino could be the man they need to make it all click together.”
