The Iranian exercise is due to launch later today. It will include mid-range missiles, rapid reaction forces and airborne units. Meanwhile the nuclear-powered supercarrier USS John C Stennis has entered the Persian Gulf with a US Navy strike group.
The Iranian drill will take place on Qeshm Island, situated in the Strait of Hormuz through which a third of the world’s oil passes.
Iranian authorities have previously threatened to block the Strait in the event of a conflict with the US.
Iran insists its exercise is purely defensive, but that they will strike back if attacked.
Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, a commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, commented: “We pose no threat to any country.

The arrival of supercarrier USS John C Stennis ends the longest US carrier group absence in the Persian Gulf since the 9/11 attacks.
The carrier is being trailed by about 30 vessels from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Captain Randy Peck, commander of the carrier, noted: “The Iranian craft drove in front of our ship and stopped and tried to capture their own picture of what was going on.”
A drone has reportedly been seen flying overhead.
Relations between Iran and the US soured badly when President Trump announced the US was withdrawing from an international nuclear deal with Iran in May.
Trump accused Iran of breaking the spirit of the agreement by continuing to develop long ranged missiles and backing terror groups across the Middle East.
Since then two rounds of US sanctions have been reimposed including on Iran’s vital oil industry.
