US risks INFURIATING Russia as fresh pressure put on Trump to KILL Putin’s Nord Stream 2

The pipeline is a major gas pipeline project to supply Russian natural gas to Europe. When complete it will run across the Baltic Sea to the European Union. However, US lawmakers fear it will be used to make European nations a slave to Moscow.

The resolution called “for the pipeline’s cancellation due to its threat to European energy security, and calling on the Russian Federation to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Kerch Strait”.

Senators Ron Johnson and Dick Durbin both cosponsored the resolution.

Their action follows a resolution passed by the US legislature’s second chamber, the House of Representatives, earlier this month.

The politicians hope their resolutions will put pressure on Trump to pressure countries in Europe to refuse to sign up to the pipeline.

They want European nations “to ensure the appropriate policies to deter the Russian Federation from further aggression”.

The pushback on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline also comes just weeks after Russia captured Ukrainian sailers navigating through the Kerch Strait – a stretch of water meant to be shared by both nations.

On November 25, Russia captured 24 Ukrainian soldiers claiming they had “illegally crossed the Russian border”.

The soldiers have yet to be released despite international pressure being placed on Moscow.

The resolution passed by the Senate also called on Trump to ensure “robust multinational freedom of navigation operation in the Black Sea” to help Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

It further called for more aid to “enhance the capability of the Ukrainian military and “provide additional security assistance to Ukraine, especially to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime capabilities”.

Explaining why he sponsored the resolution, Senator Johnson said: “The United States and our allies need to rapidly counter Russia’s military aggression in the Kerch Strait with strong and resolute action.”

After the Ukrainian military personnel were captured, Trump issued a statement claiming he was “not happy” about what had happened but failed to directly blame Russia.

He said: “We do not like what’s happening either way.

“Hopefully it will get straightened out.”
