FREXIT! Eurosceptic joy as Macron considers law change -France braces for BLACK WEDNESDAY

Activists who are pushing for France to leave the EU won their first victory on Tuesday – and a step closer to the country voting on ‘Frexit’. The news comes as the country prepares for Black Wednesday and further riots in the nation. The beleaguered French President told ministers that he would consider changing the law to allow what he called “citizens’ initiative referendums”, following calls from Yellow Vest activists who have been putting the idea forward as part of their revolt against Mr Macron’s government.

At present, the law says a vote can be held if one tenth of the population, or 4.5 million people and 185 MPs or senators demand it.

The federal courts also have to confirm that a referendum is in line with the constitution.

The yellow vest movement are fighting for power to be returned to people through the referendum process by authorising multiple votes on a host of issues – if 700,000 voters sign a petition in favour.

Radicals want to be able to vote to revoke the election of their president and MPs, to approve or quash legislation, change the constitution and adhere to or withdraw from treaties.

France’s main political parties have supported the idea of referendums, describing the process as a “good instrument in democracy”.

The news comes as Paris and other major cities in France prepare for more rioting on Black Wednesday.

Police unions preparing to protest against working conditions following scores of officers being injured since the yellow vest movement was launched in mid-November.

The Alliance union announced a “black day for police” as it urged the Macron government to invest in rebooting France’s tired security forces.

Alliance is encouraging officers nationwide to stay inside their stations and to only respond to emergency calls.

“Police are not doing well and nobody is listening,” Frédéric Lagache, deputy secretary general of the Alliance union, said.

The union also called for a work slowdown on Wednesday to protest against planned cuts in the national police budget.

Three unions have denounced working conditions and complained about what they said were strained resources as officers have been sent in to clear roadblocks and restrain violent thugs who have joined street demonstrations to stir chaos and provoke police.
