Penny Marshall has sadly died at the age of 75, her publicist has confirmed. The star first rose to fame in the 1970s, playing the role of Lavern DeFazio in the TV sitcom Laverne & Shirley. Having taken on the role in 1976, the show spanned eight series – with the last season airing in May 1983. The actor, director, and producer earned Golden Globe Award nominations for her work on the programme – and went on to scoop even more success in the industry.
Some of her directing credits include the 1986 film Jumping’ Jack Flash, as well as the 1988 fantasy comedy movie Big.
The latter work was the first film to be directed by a woman and gross more than $100 million (which currently equates to around £80 million) in the US.
She went on to direct Awakenings in 1990, the 1992 film A League of Their Own, and in 1994, Renaissance Man.
Later on in her career, in 2005, Penny also produced Cinderella Man, and Bewitched.
Her impressive work rightly saw the director take home a large pay check.

According to the website, The Wealth Record, in November 2018, Penny’s net worth stood at an estimated $55 million.
In UK currency, that equates to around £43.5 million.
Following the sad news about her death, Penny’s family issued a statement.
They said: “Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall.
“Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story.
”We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make all of their dreams come true.”
