And Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also appeared to confirm his appointment at Old Trafford.
She said on Twitter: “Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils, @olegs26_ole”.
Solskjaer could be in charge for the first time on Saturday when United take on Cardiff in the Premier League (5.30pm).
The Red Devils announced the sacking of Mourinho in a statement on Tuesday morning.
It read: “Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
