High blood pressure – do you hear this noise in your ears? Hidden signs of hypertension

High blood pressure affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK, according to the NHS.

The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The only way of knowing if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked.

But, there may be some tell-tale signs of the condition if you have extremely high blood pressure – like hearing a thudding noise in your ears.

People that can hear their heartbeat in their ears may be at risk of high blood pressure, said Harvard Medical School.

The noise could be heard more often when sitting down quietly, or when lying in bed.

The condition is known as pulsatile tinnitus, and it could be caused by either hypertension or carotid artery disease.

When someone has high blood pressure, the blood flows through the carotid artery – an artery that runs past the ears – more turbulently, which causes the noise.

“[Pulsatile tinnitus] is a type of rhythmic thumping, throbbing, or whooshing only you can hear that is often in time with the heartbeat,” said Harvard Medical School.

“Most people with pulsatile tinnitus hear the sound in one ear, though some hear it in both.

“The sound is the result of turbulent flow in blood vessels in the neck or head.

“Most of the time, pulsatile tinnitus is nothing to worry about.

“If it doesn’t go away on its own after a few weeks or becomes really bothersome, talk with your doctor about it.

”The noise could also be caused by carotid artery disease – where fatty plaque builds up inside the artery, causing turbulent blood flow.

Other causes of pulsatile tinnitus include conductive hearing loss and blood vessel disorders, it added.

High blood pressure is often difficult to spot, and many people have it without even realising it.

But, people with extremely high blood pressure may have some warning signs to look out for.

High blood pressure symptoms include chest pain, headaches and finding blood in your urine.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked.

All adults over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years.
