AWKWARD! Michelle Obama PULLS A FACE as she talks about Melania Trump’s inauguration gift

The wife of the ex-US President appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s chat show last night in her latest engagement to promote her memoir, Becoming. During the interview, Mrs Obama was asked about the day she left the White House for the last time. The former First Lady then went on to draw attention to the awkward gift encounter.

Describing her final hours of calling One Pennsylvania Avenue her home, she said: “A lot was going on that day.

“Right before that my daughters’ friends decided they needed a sleepover for the last day. I was like, ‘are you guys kidding me?’

Explaining how she dealt with her children, she said she told them: “‘We’re leaving, you’ve got to take all your stuff, pick up the blankets and the bears’ and they were all crying and I was just like ‘get out’, we’ve got to go.”

Addressing Melania Trump’s gift immediately afterwards, she added: “So, there was that and then there was the Tiffany’s box.

“It was just a lot.”

The former First Lady appeared to pull a face as she mentioned the awkward encounter as the audience laughed in sympathy at her situation.

Mrs Obama also pulled a face when handed the gift back in January 2016.

After initially thanking her successor for the kind gesture, her facial expression quickly turned soar.

Not set to return to the White House again, Mrs Obama could not place the gift inside the West Wing for safe keeping, but nor could she take it with her to the inauguration ceremony.

After a few seconds of awkwardly holding the present trying to decide how to overcome the dilemma, a member of staff came to her rescue and temporarily looked after the gift.

In January this year, 12 months after the awkward encounter, the former First Lady finally revealed what had been in the Tiffany box.

Speaking on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said: “It was a lovely frame.”
