Chelsea news: Maurizio Sarri reveals Premier League aim – fans might not like this

Sarri’s side travel to Brighton on Sunday and need a win to be certain of retaining their top-four status.

And the Italian claims they have set themselves the target of 80 points to guarantee Champions League football next season.

He did not name a traditional striker in his starting XI for the second game in a row, with Eden Hazard deployed as a false nine at the Amex Stadium.

“In Napoli I was used to playing with a solution like this (without a traditional number nine),” he said.

“This is very important for us, to have continuity or it is impossible to stay in the top four.

“It is important to stay very close to the top four. I want to see continuity from the mental point of view and the tactical point of view.

“We need to get 80 points to get into the top four.”

Chelsea have won only two of their last five games in the Premier League and are reported to be keen on strengthening their squad when the transfer window opens in January.

They are said to have launched a £60million bid to sign Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic, who is also a target for Liverpool.

Sarri has seemingly lost faith in his strikers, with both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud foreign out in recent weeks.

Gonzalo Higuain – who Sarri worked with at Napoli – is a reported target and he could be available in January.

The Argentine is currently on loan at AC Milan from Juventus and it is claimed they do not want to make the deal permanent and might even cut his spell short in January.

Higuain started the season superbly but has scored only one goal in his last nine games in all competitions.

The deal could see Morata move in the direction and return to Italy – two years after his own spell with Juventus ended.

Morata has seven goals in 23 games this season and has only one win his last eight.
