Ozil started Thursday’s 1-0 win over Qarabag in the Europa League on Thursday night and played 83 minutes of the victory.
However, he has missed all of the last three games in the Premier League and does not appear to be in Emery’s first-team plans.
The Gunners are unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions and Emery revealed he left him out for last month’s 2-1 win at Bournemouth because of concerns about his physicality.
But Mertesacker expects his fellow German to stay and fight for his place in the team.
“Mesut is a player with magical abilities,” he said.

“Last time (for the 1-0 won at home to Huddersfield on December 8) he was injured.
“Now I’m curious how he fights back. He can still be very valuable to Arsenal.”
Emery revealed Ozil could play some part on Sunday when Arsenal travel to Southampton looking to extend their unbeaten run.
“I think after his injuries he is coming back with good work and on Thursday he played with a good performance,” he said.
“I think also he is OK for Sunday.”
Emery is facing something of a defensive crisis for the trip to Saints.
Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are both suspended, while Ron Holding is out for the rest of the season because of injury.
Konstantinos Mavropanos is also injured leaving Laurent Koscielny as Emery’s only available senior centre-back.
Koscielny is set to make only his second appearance of the season as he gets back to full match fitness.
Nacho Montreal could come in as a makeshift centre-half alongside the Frenchman.
Stephan Lichtsteiner is another option in the centre of defence.
